What is a Home Security Alarm System and Its Benefits?

March 17, 2022

Is your housing area prone to break-ins and theft? Chances are that you need a home security alarm system to protect your home and family from intruders and burglars. However, you’re unsure about the level of security that the system provides.

In this article, we will share all about wireless home security alarm systems in Malaysia along with the different types of home wireless alarm security systems and how the system works.

What is a Home Security Alarm System?

A home security alarm system is a security system that can be installed in a building to protect your home from break-ins, theft, and other threats. It can include:

  • Security cameras to monitor the exterior and interior of your property.
  • Motion sensors to detect movement inside or outside your property.
  • Entry control devices, such as locks and deadbolts, are designed to keep intruders from entering your property.
  • Siren or alarm to notify you of unauthorised entry.
  • Central monitoring station that you or your family members can access remotely or by emergency personnel.

What are the different types of home security alarm systems?

With the continuous advancement in technology, it shouldn't come as a surprise that there are various types of home security alarm systems in Malaysia. As such, we will look at some of the common types of home security alarm systems.

1. Electric-powered security alarm system

The electric-powered security alarm system is the most basic type of all security alarm systems. It works to monitor entry points and is often installed during building construction to prevent loss of raw construction materials.

As the name suggests, a low-voltage electrical circuit will flow between two points, which indicates that the doors and/or windows are shut and there’s no theft or break-in. Should there be any disruption to the circuit flow, it will trigger the alarm, alerting you or your contractor.

2. Wired security alarm system

A wired security alarm system relies on your landline connection to transmit the signals to a monitoring centre. While it supports basic monitoring capabilities, there is a threat of the physical wires being cut or destroyed.

For this reason, cellular backup is recommended to prevent interference to the landline due to the weather and other possible causes.

3. Wireless security alarm system

A wireless security alarm system, on the other hand, is exactly as the name suggests – a security alarm system without wires. This alarm system typically uses a control panel and a range of sensors connected with built-in radio frequency transmitters.

Once the system is triggered, it transmits a signal to the control panel and activates the alarm. Some wireless home alarm system even allows for remote system management through your mobile device and can be integrated with other smart home functions.

4. Unmonitored security alarm system

Different from the previous two security alarm systems, an unmonitored security alarm system relies on someone near your home to alert the authorities of an emergency. Whenever there’s a trip in your system, it will trigger audible and visual alarms.

While it’s a less expensive option, an unmonitored security alarm system doesn’t provide the same level of protection as it’s not capable of notifying a monitoring centre. Even if you receive the alert on your phone, you may not be able to respond immediately.

5. Monitored security alarm system

Compared to an unmonitored security alarm system, having a monitored security alarm system is comforting. When your security alarm system is triggered, it will alert both you and the monitoring personnel. And they can quickly notify the authorities in the event of a break-in.

Depending on the type of monitored security alarm system, the alarm can be triggered in many ways. The monitoring personnel will have to verify the alarm and contact the emergency services if necessary.

How does a home security alarm system work?

A home security alarm system typically works based on connectivity between the transmitters, sensors, and control panel, which are installed in a strategic location in your home. Here’s how they work:

  • The control panel uses radio signals to communicate with your motion sensors, you, and the monitoring centre.

  • Motion sensors are usually placed inside and outside the house; on doors that lead to and from the house as well as easily accessible windows, especially those at the ground level.

  • The siren or alarm is usually equipped with a high-decibel sound that’s loud enough to alert you or your neighbours.

  • Security cameras can help monitor hard to see areas of your property, both exterior and interior. They can also be accessed remotely on your computer, smartphone, and tablet.

With a wireless home security alarm system, you get to enhance the security of your home while ensuring the safety of your loved ones.
